da Vinci Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is da Vinci robotic surgery?

The da Vinci robotic surgical system is a revolutionary technology that makes it easier for Dr. Cha to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures, such as hysterectomies and myomectomies.

If the thought of robotic surgery makes you nervous, don’t worry! Dr. Cha is 100% in control at all times. The da Vinci system converts Dr. Cha’s own hand movements into smaller, more precise actions. Since the robotic system is small and can move in ways the human wrist can’t, Dr. Cha can perform complex surgery through a very small incision.

The da Vinci system also displays a magnified, 3D, high-definition image of the inside of your body to provide Dr. Cha with important visual information.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

Traditional hysterectomies and myomectomies require a large incision across your lower abdomen, while robot-assisted procedures use much smaller incisions — about the size of a buttonhole — to insert thin instruments.

As a minimally invasive procedure, robotic surgery offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, such as:

  • Less pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery time
  • Reduced risk of complications
  • Less blood loss
  • Less damage to healthy tissue

Who is a good candidate for robotic surgery?

If you have a gynecologic condition that doesn’t improve with more conservative treatment, Dr. Cha may recommend surgery. In this case, she carefully evaluates your situation and uses the least invasive method possible. Robotic or minimally invasive surgery isn’t always feasible.

Conditions that may require surgery include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Long-term, abnormal vaginal bleeding

You could still be a good candidate for robotic surgery even if you’ve had a prior C-section procedure or have larger fibroids. Dr. Cha is thoroughly skilled and has many years of minimally invasive surgery. Be sure to talk to her about your medical history, and she’ll help you decide if this procedure is right for you.

What should I expect from a robotic hysterectomy or myomectomy?

Although minimally invasive, these procedures still typically require general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure varies depending on your individual condition, but most robotic hysterectomies and myomectomies last around three to four hours.

Dr. Cha makes three or four small incisions around your belly button; she then inserts tiny, thin surgical instruments into these incisions to perform the necessary procedure.

Afterward, you recover faster and experience much less discomfort than you would with an open surgery.
